Water, Sanitation & Hygiene

Satkhira is one of the costal district of Bangladesh. Scarcity of safe drinking water is the serious problem of this area due to salinity, contamination of arsenic and lack of adequate tube wells. To collect pure drinking water, the women have to go to far distance place and are exposed to different harassing behavior in sexual nature. For this reason, Nobo Jibon has installed some deep tube wells, semi-deep tube wells and hand pumps under this project (Disadvantaged Children Education Support with Income Generation & Safe Water Project, Phase-2 & Phase-3) in the remote and urban areas of Satkhira District. The environmental condition of the project area is very poor. On the other hand, most of the people do not use sanitary latrine. As a result, the prevalence rate of water born fecal born diseases like diarrhea, dysentery, jaundice are increasing day by day. To reduce prevalence rate of these diseases Nobo Jibon has stared installation Tube well, semi deep tube-well, deep tube-well and  sanitary latrines in the project area. During the reporting period NJ has installed tube-well-, semi deep tube-well- and deep tube-well. The bar graph indicates that the installation of various water supply options like tube-well, semi-deep tube-well, and deep tube-well has achieved 100% target and sanitary latrine has also achieved 100% target.

Objectives:

• To reduce the risks to health caused by limited access to safe water and the use of contaminated water
• To reduce / eliminate the vulnerabilities faced by people (in particular women) who travel to access safe water
• To improve the quality of life among the most vulnerable groups.

Major Activities & Services:

1. Formation of a WASH team at field level consists of 3 members for 05 deep tube wells and 385 semi deep tube wells.
2. Project site visit as per necessity
3. Meeting with community
4. Formation of safe water committee involving beneficiaries
5. Identified 385 semi deep tube wells and 05 deep tube wells sites for installation of water well in consultation with beneficiaries
6. Procure 385 semi deep tube wells and 05 deep tube wells with all necessary logistics/instrument
7. Installation of 385 semi deep tube wells and 05 deep tube wells
8. Monitor all the installation
9. Hand over the wells to the community

Overall Impacts of the Program:

• Awareness rose among people on their health, nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene.
• The safe water project is helping the local community to get safe drinking water timely and it is contributing community to survive.
• Each of the semi deep tube wells and deep tube well can be used for 5-7 years and beneficiaries were trained on how to maintain the well.
• People will be able to use safe water by using the water sources in the project area.
• People will be safe from all kinds of water born diseases if they use the wells water in the project area.
• The water sources are full of arsenic, iron and saline free. So the community people can use the water with no hesitation.
